5 top tips on how to launch a successful career in the property industry

We sat down with James Terry, our Learning and Development Manager who shared his top tips on how to make the most out of your time at Kingsley Hamilton Estates and in the property industry as a whole. Here’s what his 5 top tips are:

Think outside the box

Throughout your career you will need to be open-minded and think outside the box. Working in the property industry is not a science and therefore, using your own initiative is key to succeed. Always try to develop your creativity and your critical thinking skills. You will need to observe how properties are being marketed and how you can do better than your competitors. The more research you do, the better equipped you are to meet your clients’ expectations. You will probably make some mistakes but just make sure to learn from them.

Listen and communicate

When I first started in the property industry, I was constantly reminded that I had two ears and one mouth and to use that ratio. So listen more than you speak. It has been one of the best pieces of advice I was given. The property industry is time sensitive so you will need to quickly understand the needs of your clients. Being good at listening is key to effectively communicate with them.

Show perseverance

Working in the property industry is not easy. I always compare it to a rollercoaster ride: the highs always outweigh the lows. Things don’t always go as planned and deals sometimes fall through. You have to be prepared to take those lows and still push yourself to be the best you can be. If you go the extra mile then you will get what you put in!

Aim for excellence

Think outside the box, try new initiatives and create a name for yourself. Always stay on top of the latest property trends. You can’t inform your clients if you’re not well informed yourself. Create your personal brand

You need to create your own brand and give people a good reason to call you instead of anyone else in the business.
