We’re delighted to announce that Elaine Chan, our very own Lettings Manager has recently been recognised as the ‘best female agent in E14’ by AllAgents. The property industry has traditionally been a male-dominated workplace and continues to show a high proportion of men over women, especially when it comes to senior and leadership roles (68% vs 32% respectively, according to a recent report from PWC). So we caught up with Elaine who told us everything about her career in property, her inspirations and her advice to other women looking to start and grow their career in this industry.
How did you get into the property industry?
I always worked in sales but not necessarily in the property field. A friend of mine told me about the career opportunities in property and I decided to give it a go. I started off in sales and moved on to lettings a couple of years later – and haven’t looked back since!
What do you love most about your job?
I love that every day is different. I never get bored and there are always plenty of things to do. I think that the best thing about my role is the people I get to meet: from visiting landlords at their properties to arrange a valuation to helping tenants secure their dream property, it all plays a big part in making what I do very enjoyable. I also really like managing my Lettings Team and organising the day-to-day running of the department.
Which woman has inspired you?
My mother has always been a source of inspiration. She has taught me that hard work always pays off, never to give up and to continuously aim high.
What is like being a woman working in the property industry?
When I first started in the property industry, there weren’t many women around so you had to be very strong minded and focused as the men in the office never liked getting beaten to a target by a female. It didn’t scare me at all and only pushed me to work harder and do better. I have learned not to be afraid to stand up for myself, to go after what I want, and to fight for more responsibility. If you are prepared, professional, and willing to work hard for what you want, you will be able to overcome any obstacles.
Would you recommend working in the property industry to other women?
Yes, absolutely! The property industry needs more women. Everyone has natural strengths and areas where they excel and it’s important that you find opportunities to play to your strengths. If you feel like you’ve got the right set of skills to succeed in the property industry, don’t be afraid and just go for it – move out of your comfort zone.
