How to make your property look and feel bigger

Whether you live in an apartment in London, or in a cosy but small house in the countryside, chances are that you’ve had to compromise on the amount of living space you were hoping to have. The good news is that the answer to successful small-space living is easier than you think. Here are some easy tips to make your home feel more spacious.

Play with natural light:

Light is one of the most essential elements when it comes to helping rooms feel bigger than they actually are. A quick win here is to make the most the natural light inside of your property. Leave your windows uncovered to bring in more sunlight and draw the eye to the outdoors.

Opt for artificial light:

Adding lots of lighting will amplify the perception of space even during daylight hours. Try to avoid having visible lamps to maximise space. Instead you can use illumination as a background element hidden in wall-mounted shelves. You can also install dimmers to help you control the level of light in the room, depending on the time of day and occasion.

Choose the right colours:

The colour of a room can have a huge impact on the perception of space. Light colours are more reflective, making a room feel airy and open. Dark colours, on the other hand, tend to absorb light, making rooms look smaller. Our KHE favourites include soft tones of white, beige and blue- they’re a great neutral choice to make your room look bigger.

Add a rug:

Always use a rug that extends beyond the furniture in each room. For example, a rug that sits under the sofa, coffee table and dining table will draw the eye wider and make the room feel larger.

Maximise your furniture arrangement:

Sometimes furniture can take up a lot of space. Have a look at your current furniture and get rid of what you don’t use. To save space, opt for items that serve multiple purposes. For example, a built-in sofa will bring you useful storage hidden underneath. Opt for sofas and chairs that are raised on legs to create a sense of light and space.

Play with mirrors:

Adding large mirrors to your walls will instantly open up a room and create the illusion of a much larger space. Placing mirrors near your windows to reflect the outdoors will give your room a more open feel.
